Why choose an exercise bike?

Exercise bikes have been around for many years. The exercise bike is probably the first choice of equipment that comes to mind in people thinking of purchasing home equipment. There are good reasons for this:

  • It's easy to use.
  • Relatively cheap.
  • Takes up little space.
  • You can watch TV whilst doing it.
  • Is used in rehab due to it being non weight-bearing.
  • Used pre and post natal.

With all these positives, why do people stop using them after a few weeks? Quite simply because results are not coming fast enough.

Cycling at an easy pace for a few minutes will not make a dramatic difference, so you need to increase the difficulty on the resistance level and pedal for longer. What happens is that you will accumulate a lot of waste products (lactic acid) in your legs causing a lot of pain and discomfort. Needless to say, you won't want to keep that up for long.

With cycling you only use your leg muscles which means that you don't burn as many calories per unit of time as say, rowing or running which uses more body parts. Only people who have been cycling for a long period of time can reach high levels of cycling whilst easily getting rid of the waste products.

So if you're thinking of using a bike for your training, be ready to look long term and build up your tolerance gradually. If you do this you will lose weight, get into shape and reap the benefits from cycle training.
