Why choose a treadmill? The treadmill is probably the most commonly used piece of aerobic equipment in the home and gym. There are obvious reasons for this:
However there are many other reasons that may not be so obvious. For example, treadmills today are very well built and have a certain "give" to them which absorbs more shock, so it's better for your joints than running on concrete. Treadmills are great for pace setting, when running outside it's hard to keep up a specific pace accurately. Also, it's easier to have someone look at your running technique on a treadmill and therefore easier to improve on it. It is also true that treadmill running is not exactly the same as running outside owing to the fact that the belt is moving and therefore does not require as much forward momentum to be generated, this is why professional athletes run both outdoors and on treadmills, they take advantage of both modalities. If it's calories you want to burn then the treadmill has one definite advantage over running. If the workout is pre-set then you must keep up, you cannot take it easy as in running outdoors, unless you keep your legs moving you will not be able to stay on the treadmill. The treadmill is always found in rehabilitation centres as it offers the most benefits to almost every type of injury or disease. Rehab can take place safely and the workouts can be easily monitored and increased in a very specific manner. Lastly, running and walking is the most natural form of exercise, it's what we're built for. Research has been consistent in proving that the more we walk and run the healthier and leaner we become. Our genetics have had hundreds of thousands of years to attune our bodies to a constant daily quota of movement (walking, running), it is only in recent years that the human race has stopped moving so much with the consequent increase of degenerative disease. Running and walking are weight bearing activities and as such improve bone density and joint stability, investing your time in such activities on a daily basis is as important as reducing stress levels and maintaining a healthy diet. |
